I was looking at some of my old photos, and came across some very good memories. One of them was the short but sweet trip my husband and I had to Vancouver, BC.
It was the end of May 2015. I had completed my semester abroad in Washington state, and we decided to go to Canada for a couple of days and then fly home from there. Vancouver was an obvious choice as it is so close to WA. We had one full day, plus a couple of hours the night of arrival and the day of departure.
We got there with Amtrak, and the ride was pretty good. Lots of cool and pretty things to see along the way. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to take a lot of pictures. Not decent ones, anyway. My phone was low on battery, and the camera wasn’t really good enough to get good pictures from a moving train.
We arrived in Vancouver late at night. As soon as we cleared customs, we found a taxi to take us to our hotel. When we got there, we were very surprised. Not in a positive way. Our hotel was in a shady area – East Hastings Street. The room wasn’t exactly great either, but how things were outside was ultimately the biggest dealbreaker for us. We decided to book a different hotel for the next night. However, we just weren’t able to sleep where we were, so it all ended up with a 2 a.m hotel switch. First time that ever happened to us. We’re not exactly snobs when it comes to these things, it just felt that bad.
The new hotel was something else. We ended up at a Best Western Plus at English Bay, where they were so nice that they gave us that first night for a very reduced rate. That’s great service! Also, the room was very nice, and the bed was really comfy. We had a few good hours of sleep before we got up to explore the city. But first, when in Canada:
So, after having the best donut I’ve ever had, we were ready to go explore. We took a nice walk to Stanley Park, where we just walked around for a bit. We then walked through the Devonian Harbour Park, which was nice. After a while, we walked back to the hotel to freshen up before going out for dinner. We went for something very casual, so we ended up at AllStar Wings & Ribs. While they had a pretty insane wing menu, I decided to have a burger. Not a bad choice! It’s actually one of the better burgers I’ve had in that kind of restaurant. Fries were awesome, too. Looks like this place is closed now, though.
After dinner, we just took a walk down Robson Street, which seemed like a very nice place for shopping. Eventually, we ended up right by the hotel, at English Bay Beach. It’s really a nice area. We hung out a bit on the beach and watched the sunset before going back up to our room to sleep.
The next morning, we didn’t really have time for much. We had a great breakfast at The Park, a restaurant connected to the hotel, before going to the airport to go home.
We both really liked Vancouver, and we’re definitely going back in the future. I don’t really know how to explain it, something just felt so… right. I wish I had taken more pictures. Oh well, guess I’ll do it the next time.
Have you been to Vancouver? Did you like it?
